Introduction to Pet Pig Practice

MATT EDSON, DVM, MICP was born and raised on a small farm in Eastampton, NJ, and is the owner on Rancocas Veterinary Associates. He completed his Paramedic certification (MICP) through Virtua Health, and he then went on to graduate from Rutgers Cook College with a double major in Animal Science and Biology (BS) in 2007. Four years later, he became a 2011 graduate of the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree.

Dr. Edson is a Site Visitor for the AVMA Council on Education, and former Chair and Large Animal Representative on the AVMA Committee on Disaster and Emergency Issues. He was elected onto the NJVMA board in 2016. He is interested in many aspects of veterinary medicine, though he places an emphasis on equine, small ruminant, camelid, and pot-bellied pig medicine and surgery. He speaks both locally and nationally on the care of miniature pigs, backyard poultry, and backyard livestock.

ANGIE PAYNE, Licensed Agent AVMA Life obtained a degree in elementary education from Emporia State University. She began working at Payne Financial Strategies, Inc in 2004 as office manager and administrative assistant. She quickly took on the role of customer relations specialist and began handling all customer service issues. An NBAF Update – completion is near

KEN BURTON, DVM received his B.S. in Biology and D.V.M. degrees from Kansas State University (K-State). Prior to joining NABC in 2010, he owned and operated the Lyons Veterinary Clinic in Lyons, Kansas, providing residents of the rural community with companion animal and food animal production veterinary medicine and surgery for 28 years.

Dr. Burton is Program Director for the National Agricultural Biosecurity Center (NABC), under the direction of the Office of the Vice-President for Research. He is Principle Investigator and Co-Principle Investigator on multiple projects involving foreign and emerging animal disease (FEAD) response planning and training, identification of lessons learned from livestock emergency response exercises and events, and risk analysis of high-consequence transboundary animal diseases significant to the US livestock industry. Completed projects include comprehensive veterinary response capability and food-borne disease templates, country profiles assessing capabilities of selected foreign countries’ response to outbreaks of zoonotic and non-zoonotic high-consequence livestock or foodborne diseases, and technical information reporting guides used by non-scientific field personnel to provide high-impact foreign animal/zoonotic disease information.
